Children playing with action figures and Barbie dolls sprawled on the cold linoleum floor. Brown and dark weary faces chatting with strangers becoming friends. Scattered white faces don’t stick out in the surroundings, not quite, until she walks in.
Language barrier up as she speaks to security seeing if she’s in the right place for assistance. We’re all here in the Bronx Housing Assistance office for the same reason. In her hands is the rubber handle of a double stroller. In the stroller are two little dark faces. Is that…yes, she’s speaking French to them.
The French Connection stares down at her babies, an unreadable expression on her face and body. But her story may mimic that of a few dark faces of women with their own dark babies, no doubt.
